Product Safety & Proper Use Policy

1. General Safe Use

Indoor gardening should be one of the calmest corners of your life, and safe habits keep it that way. Before first use of any BREEDER MAGIC product, read the printed instructions and warning labels supplied in the box, and keep them for future reference. Use every product only for its intended indoor gardening purpose: a moss pole supports climbing plants, not curtain rods; a drip irrigation timer waters pots, not aquariums. Inspect products periodically for cracks, frayed cords, loosened fittings, or corrosion, and stop using any item that appears damaged.

This policy provides general guidance and does not replace the product-specific manual. It should be read alongside our Gardening & Plant Growth Disclaimer and our Terms of Service. Improper use may also void coverage under our Warranty Policy.

2. Electrical Safety for Grow Lights

Our LED grow lights are designed for indoor residential use and carry safety certifications from nationally recognized testing laboratories; look for the UL or ETL listing mark on the fixture label and use only listed equipment in your setup. Follow these rules without exception:

• Connect lights only to properly grounded 120V household outlets. Never exceed the rated wattage of an outlet, power strip, or timer — check the amperage rating before daisy-chaining multiple fixtures.
• Maintain the heat clearance stated in the manual — typically at least 6 inches of open air around the fixture housing and 12 to 24 inches between the light face and plant canopy.
• Never cover a fixture with fabric, plastic, reflective film, or plant foliage; blocked ventilation is the leading cause of overheating.
• Our lights are indoor-rated only. Do not use them outdoors, in greenhouses exposed to weather, over open aquariums, or in bathrooms with heavy steam.
• Use only the power adapter and hanging hardware supplied with the fixture. Route cords away from walkways, water lines, and heat sources, and never run cords under rugs.
• Unplug lights before cleaning, changing hanging height, or replacing any component. Do not look directly into an operating full-spectrum LED at close range.

3. Sharp Tools: Pruning Shears and Scissors

Pruning shears, bonsai scissors, and grafting blades sold in our shop are precision-sharpened steel and should be treated with the same respect as kitchen knives. Cut away from your body with your free hand well clear of the blade path, and keep the safety latch engaged whenever the tool is not actively cutting. Store sharp tools in their sheaths, in a closed drawer or tool roll, out of the reach of children — never loose in a pocket, plant caddy, or soil bag.

Clean blades after each session and dry them fully to prevent rust; a slipping, corroded blade is far more dangerous than a sharp clean one. If a spring, latch, or pivot bolt fails, retire the tool or contact us about a warranty assessment rather than improvising a repair.

4. Water and Electricity Separation

The defining hazard of indoor growing is that water and electricity live close together. Build separation into your setup from day one:

• Position outlets, power strips, timers, and adapters above and away from watering zones, never on the floor beneath hanging planters or capillary trays.
• Create a drip loop — let each cord dip below outlet level before rising to the plug, so water traveling along the cord falls off instead of entering the outlet.
• Plug grow lights and irrigation pumps into GFCI-protected outlets wherever possible; inexpensive plug-in GFCI adapters work where wall units are absent.
• Never handle plugs, switches, or fixtures with wet hands, and never mist plants while a nearby fixture is energized.
• If water contacts any electrical component, cut power at the breaker or unplug from a dry position, and let the equipment dry completely for at least 48 hours before deciding whether it can be assessed for reuse.

5. Ceramic Planter Weight and Handling

A 12-inch ceramic planter can weigh 10 to 15 pounds empty and 40 pounds or more once filled with moist potting mix and a mature plant. Lift with your legs, keep the pot close to your body, and ask for help or use a rolling plant caddy for anything larger than 10 inches. Place heavy planters on surfaces rated for the load — a windowsill or particle-board shelf that comfortably holds books may sag or fail under a watered ceramic pot.

Ceramic is strong in compression but brittle at edges: avoid dragging pots across tile, do not use a cracked pot (hairline cracks propagate suddenly, especially in freeze-prone rooms like unheated porches), and sweep up broken shards with gloves and a brush rather than bare hands. Felt pads under the base protect both floors and the pot foot ring.

6. Soils, Amendments, and Dust Precautions

Potting mixes, perlite, vermiculite, and dry amendments can release fine dust when poured. Perlite dust in particular is a respiratory and eye irritant. Sensible precautions:

• Open and pour bags slowly at waist height, in a ventilated area, and consider lightly pre-moistening perlite before handling to suppress dust.
• Wear a basic dust mask and gloves when mixing large batches of substrate, and eye protection if pouring above chest height.
• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling any soil, compost, fertilizer, or amendment, and before eating, drinking, or touching your face. Gardeners with weakened immune systems should be especially consistent about gloves.
• Store opened bags sealed with a clip, in a dry place, to prevent mold growth and pest attraction.
• Never use our horticultural products for food preparation, animal bedding, or aquarium substrate.

7. Children and Pets

Keep all gardening products — fertilizers, soil amendments, sharp tools, small irrigation fittings, batteries from timers and moisture meters — out of the reach of children and pets. Small parts such as drip emitters, hose barbs, and button-cell batteries pose choking and ingestion hazards. Fertilizers and amendments are not food and can cause serious harm if swallowed; if ingestion occurs, contact your regional poison control center or a veterinarian immediately and have the product label in hand.

Also note that many popular houseplants (pothos, philodendron, monstera among them) are themselves toxic to cats and dogs if chewed. Our planters and moss poles do not change a plant's toxicity — research each species you bring home and position tempting foliage out of a pet's reach.

8. Ladder and Height Safety for Hanging Planters

Hanging planters and ceiling-mounted grow lights involve overhead work, which quietly accounts for many home-gardening injuries. Use a stable step stool or ladder rated for your weight plus the item you are carrying — never chairs, countertops, or stacked furniture. Keep three points of contact on the ladder, work directly in front of you rather than leaning sideways, and have a second person steady the ladder for installations above 7 feet.

Anchor hooks must be driven into a ceiling joist or used with a hardware-rated toggle anchor matched to the watered weight of the planter; a freshly watered 10-inch hanging planter can exceed 15 pounds. Check hooks, chains, and macrame cords for wear every few months, and rehang anything that shows fraying, bent hardware, or drywall cracking around the anchor.

9. Product Recalls

In the unlikely event a BREEDER MAGIC product is recalled for a safety issue, we will act quickly and transparently. We will notify affected customers by email at the address on the order, post a prominent notice on our homepage and the relevant product page, and cooperate fully with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Recall remedies — free replacement, repair kit, or full refund including shipping — are provided at no cost to you, and recalled items are accepted back outside the normal 30-day window of our Returns, Refunds & Exchanges Policy. If you receive a recall notice, stop using the product immediately and follow the instructions in the notice.

10. Reporting Safety Concerns

If any of our products behaves unexpectedly — a grow light that flickers, buzzes, overheats, or emits a burning smell; a shear latch that releases on its own; a planter that cracks without impact; an irrigation fitting that bursts under normal household pressure — stop using it and tell us right away. Email care@breedermagicshop.com with your order number, a description of what happened, photos or video if possible, and whether anyone was hurt or property was damaged.

You may also report product hazards directly to the Consumer Product Safety Commission through its public reporting website. Doing so does not affect any remedy available to you from us.

11. Relationship to Warranty and Disclaimers

Following the guidance in this policy and in each product manual is a condition of coverage under our Warranty Policy: damage caused by outdoor use of indoor-rated fixtures, covered or ventilation-blocked lights, unauthorized modifications, or water intrusion into non-water-rated electronics is excluded from warranty remedies. Nothing in this policy limits rights that cannot be waived under applicable law, and nothing in it constitutes professional electrical, structural, or medical advice — consult a licensed electrician for dedicated circuits or hardwired installations, and see our Gardening & Plant Growth Disclaimer regarding plant outcomes.
